Steps to Troubleshooting Broadband Connections

This guide is intended to help you troubleshoot you broadband connection in the event that you cannot connect to the Internet.
Your Modem Lights
The best place to begin if your Internet connection is not working is by checking the lights on your modem.  If your modem is connected to the Internet you will have a solid green (or occasionally flickering) power, broadband and Internet light.
If your computer is connected to your modem you will also have at least one of the Ethernet or WiFi lights on and solid.
If your modem was bought from Spark then you can see what the different lights mean below. If your modem was not purchased from Spark, please refer to your modems user guide for support.

Power light
  • If the power light Broadband is green and solid (not flashing) - the modem has power.
  • If the power light is not on, check that the modem is plugged in to a working power point with the correct power supply.
  • For help with this light, see How to troubleshoot a modem with no Power light
Broadband light
  • If this light is green and solid (not flashing) you have a connection to your local exchange.
  • If the light is green and flashing consistently, your modem is attempting to connect to your local exchange.  This can take up to five minutes.
  • If this light is not on at all then continue troubleshooting.
  • For help with this light, see How to troubleshoot a modem with no Broadband light
The Internet light
  • If this light is green then you have a connection to Spark's Internet service.  Don't worry if the light occasionally flickers, that just means your modem is sending or receiving data.
  • If this light is off then this means that your modem has not been able to connect to Spark's Internet service.
  • For help with this light, see How to troubleshoot a modem with no Internet light
The Ethernet light
  • If you are using the Ethernet cable to connect your computer to your modem, this light should be on. The light should be green and will flicker occasionally when your modem is sending or receiving data.
  • If you have connected your computer to the modem using Ethernet and the light is off you will need to check that your computer is setup and connected correctly.
  • For help with this light, see How to troubleshoot a modem with no Ethernet light
The WiFi light
  • If you are using the WiFi option to connect your computer, tablet, phone or other device this light will be on.
  • If the light is green or orange then a device is connected to your modem. (I'm cautious about this one because this applies to a 2Wire but other modems the light is on even if nothing is connected)
  • If the light is off then nothing is currently connected to your modem using WiFi. (or in non-2Wire modems the WiFi is simply turned off)
  • If the light is red then there is wireless interference preventing your WiFi from working correctly.
  • For help with this light, see How to troubleshoot a modem with no WiFi light
