Nigerian Consumers Losing $4.4 Billion Annual to
Poor Networks
Nigeria's mobile phone users are losing
N730 billion (USD4.4 billion) a year due to
the poor quality of mobile networks,
according to the National Association of
Telecommunications Subscribers.
The President of NATCOMS, Chief Deolu
Ogunbanjo said that a recent fine of N647
million imposed on the networks should have
been given to the subscribers as compensation,
not gone to the central government coffers.
"Here in Nigeria, there was no service disruption
but there is poor quality of service, which
makes subscribers lose every year, the
minimum of N730 billion." he told Vanguard
newspaper.
"The NCC Act of 2013, and there is a section of it
that deals with human issues but when you go
through the Act, there is nothing to really
protect the consumer from poor quality of
service, except perhaps there is something on
disruption of services." he added.
He said it was unfortunate that it is not
customers who benefit when the mobile
networks are fined, but the government who
gets the money.
He did not however explain how he came to the
N730 Billion of losses figure that was cited.
